Iyengar yoga is what B.K.S Iyengar's students call the method of teaching classical yoga that this renowned teacher has developed over 75 years of practice.

B.K.S. Iyengar, now 91 years old, lives in Pune, India. His books, including Light on Yoga and Light on Pranayama, have become classic yoga texts and are used by practitioners from many traditions around the world.

Iyengar teachers develop a profound understanding of how the body works through their own practice. The tradition progresses students through poses in a mindful and methodical way. Students are not introduced to a new pose until the teacher knows they are ready. In this way, students move from the easiest to the most advanced poses safely and intelligently.

In the 1970's, Mr. Iyengar pioneered the use of props- sticky mats, chairs, belts, blocks, and bolsters- in the practice of yoga. Their primary function is to help students gain maximum benefit from the poses they practice, not to make the poses easier.

Teachers certified in the Iyengar tradition are internationally acknowledged to be among the best trained teachers in the world. In the southeast, there are Iyengar centers in many cities including Atlanta, New Orleans, Nashville, Memphis, Asheville, Jackson, and Charlottesville. Yoga On 30A is the first Iyengar center on the Florida panhandle.
